Experiencing UltraHD/4K in an HD World
As Ultra HD 4K continues to rise in popularity and demand, and coexist alongside the vast landscape of 1080 Full HD infrastructures, solutions that allow these different resolutions and products to work well together will also be required.
While it may be desirable to design an UltraHD system end-to-end, the fact is, there are many current installations that will only allow upgrades or additions of certain components to the existing infrastructure. This is where full featured image scaling is needed in the picture, so to speak.
All Pixels Work Together
Some of the design challenges faced when integrating UltraHD with Full HD and other formats is dealing with different frame rates and resolutions. When taking a 1080p image (~2M pixels) and converting it to Ultra HD (~8M pixels), you are creating four times the original content, so thoughtful design is key to a performance scaling engine. Amongst several important factors of scaling an image, is handling motion, and frame rate conversions. Thorough design in scaling is necessary when converting frame rates to ensure the smoothest motion quality.
The PureLink Advantage
PureLink has approached 4K scaling with an all or none view. While other manufacturers have and continue to choose off the shelf scaling chips, which either limit to upscaling only, or offer limited choices of resolutions to scale from and no frame rate conversion, we have chosen to provide a complete 4K up and down scaling solution. This is essential and significant to resolving all of the challenges presented in a multi-format system architecture. We make this scaling technology available at every output of our PureMedia™ cross platform matrix routing system.
